Lubbock Fire Rescue responded after 2:00 pm Tuesday to the report of a chemical spill near 46th Street and MLK.

Roughly 30 minutes into the incident, the LBK Alert system said: “Lubbock Fire Rescue currently has MLK Ave between 50th and 40th blocked. Please use alternative route.”

LFR later provided an update, saying there was a call to the Cotey Chemical Corp. in the 4400 block of MLK.

LFR said a 330 gallon container of hydrochloric acid ruptured.  Acid ran out of the business through the parking lot and onto the street.  LFR said it poses no hazard to the public. This particular hydrochloric acid was described as a very strong form of what is used in swimming pools.

Cleanup might take a few hours. No injuries were reported.
