A Mexican citizen was arrested on May 25 for a federal charge of “alien smuggling” according to court records which were unsealed Thursday afternoon.

Fermin Herrera-Angeles, age not listed, was stopped in a minivan in Floydada by a Texas DPS Trooper.

A criminal complaint said, “Herrera-Angeles, a citizen of Mexico, was transporting two citizens and nationals of Honduras, five citizens and nationals of Guatemala, one citizen of Mexico and one citizen of El Salvador.”

“All were illegally present in the United States,” the complaint said.

“Fermin Herrera-Angeles states that he knowingly agreed to transport, for a fee, nine people whom he knew to be illegal aliens from Texas to other destinations,” the complaint said.

Those destinations included Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.  One of the men in the van told federal officials he agreed to pay $10,000 to be smuggled to Dallas from Guatemala.  Another agreed to pay $5,000 to be smuggled from Mexico to Mesa, Arizona.

A federal magistrate in Lubbock ordered that Herrera-Angeles remain locked up until a detention hearing on June 13.
