Short Term Forecast:
*** Heat Advisory for Borden and Scurry County from 1:00 PM Saturday to 7:00 PM Sunday. ***

A few showers and storms did pop up across the eastern South Plains and the Rolling Plains late this afternoon and lingered into the early evening. We had one severe thunderstorm that moved from Childress down to Paducah and then east of Guthrie. The storms have now ended in our eastern viewing area. Mostly clear conditions are expected late this evening and tonight with lows in the middle to upper 60s. It will be sunny and hot on Saturday, with highs in the upper 90s to low 100s. We’ll be flirting with the record high here in Lubbock on Saturday. The record high is 101° from 1945. I’m forecasting a high of 102° in the city. 

Extended Forecast:
Hot weather is expect across the south plains and the rolling plains over the next seven days. Highs over the holiday weekend will be in the upper 90s to low 100s. It’ll be a little cooler on Memorial Say Monday, as highs drop back into the upper 90s. The rest of the upcoming week will be hot as well, with highs ranging between 100 to 105. Normal highs for late may should be in the middle 80s.

Overnight lows will be on the warm side with upper 60s and lower 70s expected each day. Normal lows for late should be around 60-degrees.

Overall, the forecast over the next seven days will be hot an dry. There is a very small chance of a thunderstorm on Memorial day Monday. 

Drought Update:
Our recent rainfall did help improve drought conditions across the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Most of the area was dropped back to severe stage drought status. However, areas that didn’t receive as much rain did stay in extreme to exception status. Below is the graphical look at the latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor that was released on Thursday (May 24).
