Severe thunderstorms on Saturday brought hail, heavy winds, and damage to numerous homes in South Lubbock. Golf ball sized hail made their mark on homes, especially on skylights and roofs.
Roofing companies went to work on Sunday, responding to hundreds of phone calls and requests for damage assessments and repairs.
“We normally don’t work on Sundays, but we had all hands on deck this morning and our staff was in for half a day, taking calls so we could go out and help people,” said Mike Hiebert, owner of Cantex Roofing and Construction.
Homeowners Phillip Kitten and Chad Grant both had damage to their roofs, requiring them to be completely replaced.
“He got up to the top of the ladder and was able to spot black spots in the roof that were hail indentations. He said your roof is toast,” said Kitten.
Almost all the homes Hiebert inspected had enough damage to be claimed by insurance, he said.
Hiebert said while homeowners may not notice damage to roofs, at a closer glance it could be there. If uncertain, it is always a good idea to have it inspected.
Other damage homeowners faced included rain gutters, cars, and outdoor appliances.
Numerous roofing companies offered assistance, driving the streets and putting up signs for their services.
However, when hiring a roofing contractor, homeowners should heed caution of scams. The Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association (LARCA) has a list of legitimate roofing businesses licensed by the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas.
