The South Plains Food Bank Conquer Hunger Run will be on May 28 at Mackenzie Park.

The run officially kicks off the Summer of Sharing Food Drive. It is free to register. They just ask that people bring non-perishable food to donate.

Summer is the busiest time of the year for the South Plains Food Bank, but it is also when they see their shelves slim down. The Summer of Sharing Food Drive is a way to build up their shelves, and also make people aware of the need for donations during the summer.

“Our children who are in school are losing out of that free and reduced lunch and so they are losing a guaranteed meal,” Macy Lopez, marketing director of the South Plains Food Bank, said. “So, we find ways to guarantee meals during the summer. We sponsor over 30 sites around the South Plains where we provide a hot nutritious meal and a snack to over 2,000 kids a day.”

Right now, the food bank said they are running low on boxed items like pasta and cereal and will need volunteers to hep out at the food bank throughout the summer. You can find more information about the race and how to volunteer at spfb.org.
