Authorities arrested Justin Kyle Lopez on Tuesday for aggravated assault on a peace officer. Police accused him of pointing a handgun at a Plainview detective.
Around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, a Plainview Police Department detective was investigating an unrelated case at a Dollar General in the 600 block of West 24th Street.
The detective observed Lopez being “very unruly with the clerk,” according to a Plainview Police news release. When the detective tried to calm Lopez down, Lopez started making threats toward the detective.
Outside the store, Lopez pointed a handgun at the detective, according to the release.
Lopez then ran to a residence in the 600 block of West 23rd Street.
The Plainview Police Department, Hale County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety evacuated nearby residents and created a perimeter.
“After several minutes of attempting to get Mr. Lopez to surrender the decision was made to have the SWAT team make entry and apprehend him. Mr. Lopez was found to be hiding inside a closet and in his possession was a handgun,” the release said.
Lopez was arrested and transported to the Hale County Sheriff’s Department. He was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and with related charges.
The case is under investigation.
