Abilene police say a false report of a car being stolen at gunpoint caused SWAT team members to take a man into custody Wednesday.

The SWAT team surrounded a home near N. 3rd Street and Victoria Street around 1:00 p.m. after spotting a vehicle that was reported stolen at gunpoint outside.

A suspect was peacefully detained and taken to the police station for questioning.

During the subsequent investigation, detectives learned, “the initial report appears to have been fabricated,” according to the Abilene Police Department.

The suspect, who BigCountryHomepage is choosing not to identify, was booked into jail for a parole violation warrant but was not charged in connection to the reported robbery.

When asked if the individual who fabricated the robbery report will be facing any charges, APD replied, “agents are investigating the circumstances of the report in further detail and will file charges if appropriate.”
