A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned in a pond at his family’s house on Monday. Wednesday afternoon, Trevor Sanders was back home after a hospital stay.
“He was playing on the porch and I went inside for a minute to help my dad with some dinner,” said Trevor’s mom, Beth Sanders.
That’s when Beth’s dog, Cisco, alerted her to the danger her son was in. While Beth was inside, Trevor ran to play down by the pond in front of her house.
“I picked him up out of the pond. He was already blue,” said Beth. “I went and laid him down and screamed for my dad.”
“Next thing I knew she was screaming and hollering ‘he’s not breathing, he’s gone!'” added Trevor’s grandfather, Kevin Sanders.
He said everything went blank, but luckily Kevin learned CPR nearly 40 years ago in high school.
“I had him breathing by the time the Sheriff’s Department showed up,” he said. “I think they need to put it back (in schools) for this simple reason. It don’t have to be your grandson or your daughter, it can be anybody. If somebody knows CPR, at least they can save a life.”
Smith County Sheriff’s deputy David Hickey helped remove any water Trevor may have ingested. Fire and rescue also came to administer oxygen before EMS took him to the hospital.
“He hollers for me all the time when I’m not around. He’s my world,” said Kevin.
Kevin and Trevor’s great-grandfather installed extra lattice work to Beth’s front porch and an extra latch on the gate to make sure he doesn’t get out again.
“I don’t know if he learned his lesson, but I’ve learned mine,” said Beth.
