For the past three months Lubbock DPS dispatchers have had assistance from Amarillo when taking calls due to a shortage of employees. Lt. Bryan Witt said they currently have four positions they are looking to fill in the communications support division.
“We are having to overwork the few that we have, they are asked to come in and do more and they have to pull the weight of the whole communications facility,” Lt. Witt said.
Whether it’s failing the background check, not wanting to do shift work, or just a lack of patience, Witt said they are struggling to find long term employees who are dedicated to the career. The employment screening takes three to fourth months, but he said the benefits are worth the wait.
- Beginning Salary: $2601.96/Mo ($31,223.52/yr)
- State-paid health & life insurance for employee
- Paid sick & vacation accrues from your first day worked
- State retirement with matching contribution of 9.5% of gross salary
- Shift differential supplemental pay
Lt. Witt said although Amarillo has been very helpful with taking calls during the shortage, it has it’s challenges.
“Due to the fact our local officers here work to build close relationships with Lubbock PD, the Sheriff’s office, record services, EMS and things like that,” Lt. Witt said.
