The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office told everythinglubbock they have five sex offenders coming in to register this week, more than their monthly average of two.
There is currently 173 registered sex offenders in Lubbock County, with 30 in jail.
Corporal Pat Holbert, LSO Public Information Officer said they are unsure of why there’s an increase but it’s important to always be safe. Depending on a sex offender’s risk category level one through three, based off of the offense, after they register they are required to either check in with the Sheriff’s office once every three months or once a year.
The Department of Public Safety determines their risk level on a case to case basis. The offender has to provide an updated picture, and any address changes.
“We make sure we find out immediately if they have missed an appointment, so we start right away look into that and we work very closely with other agencies and that helps that all of the agencies work very closely on any type of sex offender and we just help each other out,” Holbert said.
Holbert said that if at any time the offender violates their parole, it can result in a felony and direct prison time. The Sheriff’s office warns that sexual predators of all age groups, male and female and it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.
