With the help of Hazard Control Technologies, the Lubbock Fire Department is testing out a new product that they say will not only help put fires out quicker, it will also prevent burns and eliminate cancer risks when they’re exposed to toxins while fighting flames.

Lubbock Fire Rescue held a training session at the Preston Smith Airport and practiced putting a fire out in a plane fuselage, using what’s called an encapsulating product. Captain Kevin Ivy said it’s important for all the firefighters to become familiar with the product before it’s installed.

“The main reason we are out at the airport is we have the capability to use live fuel. What you saw right there was 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel put out and it put that out in less than a minute,” Ivy said.

Jeff Bonkoski was a firefighter for 27 years,  now working with Hazard Control Technologies he said not only does the product provide for better visibility and reduce smoke, but it helps to remove toxins from the soot helping to prevent cancer.

“I have lost too many brothers and sisters in the fire service due to cancer, so if I can hopefully use my training to save lives, that’s what it’s all about,” Bonkoski.

The Fire Department said they will have the foam spray come out of all of their front line vehicles, and that it’s more cost effective than the product they usually use.
