Located a hour southeast of Lubbock, Lake Alan Henry can be found four miles east of Justiceberg, Texas. The nearly 3,000 acre lake serves as a water source for Lubbock and attracts people from across the nation.
According to Mike Burk, owner of Lake Alan Henry Lodges, the lake wasn’t even on a Texas map until a few years back. Burk opened up the Lodges in 2006, which is an old Texas school house. The quaint building has seven rooms that can be rented out, each able to sleep six people.
“If you haven’t been to the lake and you think West Texas water is all muddy, this lake is clear water, it’s beautiful. You get in and it smells like rain water instead of lake water,” Burk said. “It’s got huge fish, and the summer skiing is just tremendous.”
Although the lake currently doesn’t offer boat rentals, Burk said it’s something in the works. Even if you don’t have a boat, fun is a guarantee. Fishing guide, Norman Clayton said the lake is a fisherman’s paradise.
“It currently holds the state record for spotted bass at 5.98 lbs. The record bass is 15 lbs, the large mouth bass,” Clayton said.
For some folks, like Kyla Reid and her family of six, going to the lake is more than just an annual vacation, it’s a way of life.
“We’ve been coming out here for several years whenever our kids were in high school, we just love coming out here for family time,” Reid said. “We have a little place here, it’s our get away from the world.”
