Thousands of families made their way to The City of Lubbock Cemetery on Monday to honor their loved ones who served. The Texas Historic Cemetery had it’s first person buried there in 1892, and to this day it’s the final resting place of nearly 2,000 veterans.
Janelle Fountain Neils said her and her six other siblings come regularly to visit their brother who served in Vietnam, and their Father who served in WWl.
“When I come and visit the graves, I always think about, one day we’ll meet again, its not over, it dont stop at the cemetery,” Neils said.
Lisa Sammons visited her brother who served in Vietnam, she brought a few of her brother’s little nephews to teach them about Memorial Day and the importance of honoring veterans.
“It’s an honor, it’s a great honor, for us, we have what we have because of him,” Sammons said.
Two sisters, Sarah Willis Rodriguez and Delaury Willis Mize came to visit their father, a longtime Navy veteran who passed away in July.
“Memorial Day was always so important to my father, both sides of the family have had people who have served, so I think it was instilled in us to honor our military,”
The cemetery stays open seven days a week during daylight hours.
