Intentional Living – Healthy Changes

Most of us can relate to trying to be healthy and then falling off the wagon. In this week’s Intentional Living, one mom struggled with staying on track during the stay at home orders. And she gives us her reason for making healthy changes.

Aubrey Thixton says, “In December I woke up in the middle of the night and I could not get my heart to stop and just pounding it felt like there was a fist in my chest pounding from the inside out almost and I had experienced that before, but it seemed like I could take a breath.” But this time Aubrey noticed something different,, “two hours later I couldn’t get it to quit so I woke up my husband and said something is wrong.”


She goes on to say they made it to the ER and doctors decided to put her to sleep and shocked her heart back into rhythm. But then it happened again.

“This time it hit during the day I called my doctor and he said, come in now.”

At 35 years old Aubrey had ablation on her heart and was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter. Dr. Kyler Barley sat her down for a stern talk.

Dr. Barkley explained “a lot of that is related to obesity and obstructive sleep Apnea. So we had a long discussion about what would be the best thing for her.”

Struggling with your weight can cause a multitude of problems at a young age.

“What a lot of people don’t know is being obese that even a young age puts you at risk for those cardiovascular events moving forward.”

So after her scare in the hospital, Aubrey decided on her “why’ to be healthier. “It’s not fun I’m going in the hospital it’s not fun I’m thinking about what am I going to do with my kids, you know, it’s not to think about leaving them, for food. They are my motivation, they are my why.”

Dr. Barkley gave her some resources to help her with her journey.

“A good resource is a book called ‘The Obesity Code’, written by Jason Fung.

Aubrey took those resources and made changes. And since December has lost 40 pounds.

Dr. Barkley is very proud of how she has responded to being healthier, “she’s done a phenomenal job,, I think, as long as she continues to do what she is doing.”
