Lilly Alameda, age 11, of Amarillo said she was sad to see people lose their things when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in late August.

“So, I wanted to find a way to help them and I thought about how they have to be going to school,” Lilly said.  “We can get some school supplies for them so their parents won’t worry.”

Esmeralda Alameda, Lilly’s mom, explained, “I didn’t know that or think that she could come up with something that would be that extreme.”

“To think about people she’s never met in her entire life and probably will never meet,” Esmeralda said.

The family reached out to the Wesley Community Center.

Georgia Estrada, who is with the center said, “It was exciting to see a 5th grader seeing the need to go over there during the Hurricane Harvey situation…”

“She realized that the schools were destroyed down there,” Estrada said. “She realized that there was a need for school supplies and backpacks.”

Lilly was pleasantly surprised to see how many donations have already been made.

“A little happy because I can see other people have a great heart too,” she said.

The Wesley Community Center is also looking for many hygiene products and cleaning supplies.
