Treveon Tyler, 14, said the events leading up the Wednesday afternoon’s fight that was caught on camera started the day before with a name-calling misunderstanding.

“This girl asked me to go sharpen her pencils,” Treveon said. “So I sharpened her pencils and when I came back my other friend said something under his breath and the girl thought it was me. So she said it’s ok my boyfriend’s going to get you.”

After the misunderstanding, Treveon said he started getting threatening texts from that girls boyfriend that his grandmother told him to ignore.

Then on Wednesday afternoon when Treveon was walking his best friend, another 14-year-old who is also pregnant, from Smylie Wilson Middle School through Maxey Park.

“I gave her my phone so she could call her mom to pick her up the rest of the way,” Treveon said. “Right in the middle of that a red car pulled up and the dad got and said ‘yes that’s him,’ and then the oldest one with tattoos started walking towards me and the little one with the cap asked, ‘where’s the gun’ and the daddy said, ‘I already have the gun.'”

That’s when the two adult men and one teenage attacked Treveon while being recorded.

“When they were on top of me that’s when the daddy told me let me know when your finished because I’m going to finish him off,” Treveon said.

Treveon said he was able to get free and run away using moves he learned in wrestling.

“They couldn’t catch me so they turned around and started asking my best friend for the phone because they knew she was recording,” Treveon said. “So they hit her with the bat in the side and on the top of her head then they left. Then I noticed they took my bag.”

Treveon and his best friend went back to school and told officials what happened and they were both sent to the hospital.

There were no serious injuries but the ordeal wasn’t over.

On Thursday, Treveon got more texts from the teen attacker asking for a rematch, so Treveon took his phone straight to the principal.

“While he’s [the attacker] asking for a rematch in the park while he’s [Treveon’s] in class,” Treveon’s grandmother Sandra Daniels said. “Well the police took over then and started texting him back so that’s the reason why they ended up getting him.”

Treveon and his grandmother said they are grateful to the community for the support and are relieved the video is out there.

“You know if they could do that to a 14-year-old and another 14-year-old that’s pregnant, God knows what else they could do to anybody,” Daniels said.

While the teen attacker is in police custody, the two adults involved are not.

Warrants were issued for James Ybarra, 41 and David Ybarra, 23 Friday.

As of Saturday evening they still have not been booked in the Lubbock County Jail.
