Lubbock Police said early Friday evening that a second victim died after a crash just after midnight in the 3900 block of Interstate 27.  

Police said Joseph Espinoza, 20, died shortly after he was taken to University Medical Center.  Mia Brittany Bierra, 18, was at first taken to UMC with life-threatening injuries.  

Bierra was the second victim who later died.

Police issued the following statement Friday morning concerning the details of the crash: 

This morning, Friday, March 25, 2016, at approximately 12:49 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a vehicle crash in the 3900 block of I-27 southbound. A 2004 Ford Mustang had flat tire and was stopped in the right lane of travel.

The driver, Joseph Espinoza – 20 was working on fixing the flat when a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup traveling southbound struck him and the Ford Mustang. Mr. Espinoza and his front passenger, Mia Brittany Bierra – 18, were taken to UMC with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Espinoza died a short time later. The driver and passenger of the GMC Sierra suffered minor injuries.

The Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene and is investigating the crash. No other information will be released at this time.
