A large number of South Plains residents gathered at Mackenzie Park Saturday morning for the 2016 Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes.

The annual fundraiser supports the American Diabetes Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by the disease.

This year’s goal was to raise $500,000 with more than 2,500 walkers in Lubbock.

The American Diabetes Association is the only organization that fights all types of diabetes – Type 1, Type 2, gestational, and pre-diabetes.  Three people are diagnosed with diabetes every minute.

The organization connects families, visits children and teens who are newly diagnosed and provides people with the latest knowledge to help them most effectively manage diabetes daily and much more.

According to the American Diabetes Association’s website, more than 34,000 people in Lubbock live with diabetes daily and more than 85,00 live with pre-diabetes.

This year marks the 76th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association.
