Friday night, No. 23 Texas Tech knocked off Oklahoma 6-1, en route to clinching their second-straight Big 12 series to open conference play.
Texas Tech (15-7, 4-1) started fast once again posting one run in both the first and second innings to get out to a 2-0 lead.
In the first Tech sophomore outfielder Tanner Gardner singled down the right field line to score Tech sophomore second baseman Michael Davis, Tech led 1-0.
Then in the second, Davis knocked in a run with a single that dropped into right field, that scored Tech freshman catcher Matt Bernstein.
On to the fifth inning, the Sooners’ pitching staff reared their ugly head once more. With the bases loaded Oklahoma junior right-handed pitcher J.B. Olson walked home two-straight Texas Tech runs to build the Raiders lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Bernstein grounded out to second, but it brought home Tech senior first baseman Eric Gutierrez scored to make it 5-0 Tech.
In the top of the sixth inning, Oklahoma finally posted their first run of the evening, Sooners’ junior infielder Jack Flansburg grounded out to second base but scored Oklahoma junior catcher Renae Martinez.
However, in the bottom of the sixth Texas Tech would tack on one more. Tech junior outfielder Stephen Smith blasted a solo shot over the left field wall to give the Red Raiders the 6-1 lead.
No. 23 Texas Tech will be back out against Oklahoma for the series finale on Saturday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
