Pray Lubbock is sponsoring an assembly for the purpose of allowing the community to gather and pray for our country, our state and our community. This will take place at noon at the Lubbock County Courthouse Gazebo on Thursday, May 5th, 2016.
This one-hour event on the courthouse lawn (corner of Broadway and Texas Avenue) will feature prayers for issues that affect our community and country. Civic leaders, pastors, and others from across the city will lead these prayers. Elected officials will be invited to come before the assembly in order to receive prayer.
The theme of the 2016 National Day of Prayer is “Wake Up America”, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of our Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name. The theme verse is Isaiah 58:1a: “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.” The 2016 National Prayer for our Nation, written by Dr. Tony Evans, will be read in gatherings across our country.
Notable timeline: 1775: George Washington implements the first declaration of a day of prayer and fasting; 1863: President Lincoln calls for prayer and fasting during the Civil War; 1952: President Harry Truman signs a National Day of Prayer declaration into law; 1988: President Reagan amends and signs law, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May (source: nationaldayofprayer.org).
