Over the 4th of July weekend, Lubbock residents might notice eight sisters having their 26th annual reunion.
“The reason we do this, when our mom passed away in 1987, her sisters got together without the husbands,” said Winnie Paul of San Antonio. “And we thought, ‘Why can’t we do it?’ Why not keep that tradition?”
Paul said they are the Lewis Sisters. They have been meeting since 1990.
“We believe it’s a ministry,” Paul said. “We put it out there to families that you can get along. There’s so much hatred in the world. We’re just trying to put our story out there to let others know it can be done.”
The time in Lubbock includes shopping, movies, manicures, pedicures, pajama night, artwork, and visiting their dad who lives in Lubbock.
“One of the unique things we do is we dress alike when we’re together. So when we go places, we stand out. And people will ask are you in a club or a group?”
“We never take husbands. We never take our kids,” Paul said. “We have a blast. We’ve never been arrested.”
There was one year when they were a little too loud and someone called security.
“There was one time. So that’s pretty good,” Paul said. “It’s the highlight for me every year.”
The Lewis Sisters reunion rotates between Lubbock, Corpus Christi, and Forth Worth during the second week of July each year.
