Families from across Lubbock and the South Plains are invited to crowd Buddy Holly Lake Saturday for the the 8th Annual “Vamos a Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing” event. The event will run from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Buddy Holly Lake, located at Cesar Chavez Drive and North University Avenue. Participants will be able to register onsite at the fishing event.
Los Hermanos Familia, a collaborative group of men and women, organizations, and volunteers who value God, family, and community, will host the event on Vamos a Pescar was established to honor the last wish of Gonzalo Garcia after he had heart surgery. Frank Garcia, his son, started Vamos a Pescar with his wife Christy as an event to learn about fishing and also bond as a family.
“We know families are busy, but my daddy’s work often prevented him from getting to participate in family outing and activities. We use fishing as a means to bring families together,” he said adding that the event is free, does not require a fishing license, and the lake is stocked with hungry catfish,” Garcia said.
He also said “we are excited to bring this free event back to families in our community once again.”
Christy Martinez-Garcia added that this year’s event will be dedicated to first responders.
“We have several first responders who are members and part of our member associations, and in lieu of recent events, we want honor all of those in our community that dedicate their lives daily to the quality of life and safety of our families, and of our communities,” Martinez-Garcia said.
She added that a moment of silence would take place after a short opening ceremony. And that the Thin Blue Line American Flag, to be borrowed from their member association – Los Carnales La Familia, a law enforcement motorcycle club that has been involved with the event for four years, will fly among the American and military flags.
Martinez-Garcia concluded by sharing that organizers work tenaciously to assure participating families a safe and fun time, and keep the fishing event free, to assure that families are not hindered by cost. And simply to allow them a chance to form memories.
Buddy Holly Lake, which is located west of University, will be stocked with catfish prior to the event.
Participants are encouraged to bring fishing gear and necessary items to protect themselves from the elements, and enjoy the day out for fishing.
