911 Calls and Photos Released After Pit Bull Euthanization Goes Viral

Photos and 911 calls are released by the City of Amarillo after a pit bull is euthanized.

The following is a timeline of events from officials with the City of Amarillo:

On May 8, at 11:41 p.m., city officials say an emergency 911 call was placed to request an ambulance for a male that was bleeding.

Officials told us the man was transported to the hospital, and the injuries sustained were significant and required surgery. We want to warn you, the images are considered GRAPHIC. They can be viewed here and here.

On May 9, at 12:17 a.m., officials say an Animal Management and Welfare (AMW) officer arrived at the hospital to interview the injured man for the bite report after being told the attacking dog was a stray.

Officials said upon talking with the man further, he admitted the attacking dog was his male dog.

According to the report, the fight was instigated when the owner’s female dog started attacking a six-month-old puppy, at which point the male dog joined in the fight. That is when officials said the owner tried to intervene and was attacked by the male dog which resulted in the injuries to the owner.

Later that day, at around 10:58 a.m., officials said AMW arrived at the owner’s residence to meet with the owner’s wife who surrendered the male dog to AMW for aggressive behavior toward humans and animals, and the dog was humanely euthanized upon arrival to the shelter.

Officials said later that day, at 10:11 p.m., another emergency call was made from the same residence to report that a dog had attacked two people and another dog.

AMW said they arrived at the residence at 10:44 p.m. and found the female dog was the attacker. Officials said the occupants refused to go back inside the residence while the dog was inside, and the owner surrendered the dog to AMW.

AMW returned to the shelter at 11:14 p.m. to impound the surrendered female dog which was subsequently placed in kennel G7.

Officials say AMW procedure is to “red-tag” a kennel which houses a dangerous animal. They said this procedure was not followed. The employee who did not follow that procedure has faced disciplinary action.

On May 10, at around 11:30 a.m., AMW was notified by a shelter volunteer that the female dog in G7 was in labor. Officials told us at this time staff became aware of the dangerous animal status and determined to humanely euthanize the female dog and two puppies.

Officials said the female dog was euthanized via intravenous injection and the puppies were subsequently euthanized via intraperitoneal injection, in accordance with accepted veterinary medicine practices of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
