A dozen mayors from West Texas gathered at the Civic Center Friday afternoon for the 27th Annual Beans and Cornbread Luncheon, raising money for the Hospice of Lubbock.

Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson said the luncheon is personal for him.

“We used hospice with my mother-in-law, and I just can’t tell you how critical it was to have them and their expertise at that time,” Mayor Roberston said.  “I invite everybody to support hospice not just during the mayor’s beans and cornbread luncheon but throughout the entire year.”

The luncheon is the largest fundraiser for the year for Hospice of Lubbock. Proceeds go towards Hospice of Lubbock’s non-funded and under-funded patients and families, grief recovery center and children’s grief camp.

“It goes to support our charity care program and then make sure that people who need our help have our help,” CEO of Hospice of Lubbock Charley Wasson said.

Event organizers said the expected around 2,000 people at the event and ate food provided by River Smith’s.  Mayor Robertson said the luncheon is a great way to highlight the important work that hospice caretakers do.

“They come in, they help with the grieving family and not only that they help with the dying patient they people that work in this field are special,” Mayor Robertson said.

Hospice of Lubbock has been the region’s only non-profit adult and pediatric hospice since 1987.
