Critics and audiences are raving about Hidden Figures. It’s the story of three African-American women who were the brains behind NASA’s brawn when they all hurled John Glenn into orbit. More than a film about race, and more than a film about space, Hidden Figures crafts a true American tale with all the turbulence and triumph in between. It’s rated PG and runs right at two hours, launch yourself into the story at the Alamo Drafthouse, Premiere or either Cinemark.

A Monster Calls will grip your imagination. It’s a coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old boy trying to cope with his very-ill mother, bullies in school and other tween tribulations. He finds a nighttime ally in the monster who guides him through his trial, and the journey might just take your breath away. The PG-13 fantasy/drama runs not quite two hours, and you can answer the call at either Cinemark.

Lubbock Moonlight Musicals presents Tarzan this weekend and next. It’s the classic tale, told by Edgar Rice Burroughs back in 1914, but this production, based on the Disney film, ends with a twist. Phil Collins wrote the music and lyrics and it’s sure to be fun for the whole family. Tickets range from $25 to $71, and you can get them through Select-a-Seat.
