Lubbock Police Department says they had a “successful” first weekend of this year’s warrant roundup. They say several people with outstanding warrants took the initiative of taking care of their warrants themselves, versus waiting for police to make arrests.
“They started out with about 28 – 30,000 in that range of warrants,” said Lt. Ray Mendoza, the LPD Public Information Officer. “I checked this morning, and it was 24,000. So, people are trying to come forward and take care of these issues on their own, as opposed to being an inconvenience by us and coming by to pick them up.”
There are technically two warrant roundups taking place concurrently: one that is state-wide, otherwise known as the “Great Texas Warrant Roundup,” which Lubbock County is participating in. The other is run by the city, which happens to be held at the same time as the state’s.
If you are confused as to who to go to for your outstanding warrant, it depends on who issued the citation:
The Municipal Court handles tickets issued by LPD (this also includes L.I.S.D police, airport officials, animal control, code enforcement).
Lubbock County will handle tickets issued by the Sheriff’s Office, Highway Patrol, Judicial Compliance, DPS and Texas Tech police.
The warrant roundup(s) run through until mid-March.
Lubbock Police hope that people will continue to come forward with their warrants as they did with this past weekend. They say it’s a win-win for both sides: if more people address their outstanding warrants themselves, the less aggressive approach LPD has to take (i.e.: coming to houses, making arrests at residents’ homes).
“Right now, the best thing that anyone can do with these warrants is just contact the Municipal Court and take care of it,” said Lt. Mendoza. “What we try to do is keep voluntary compliance. If you’ve got an outstanding warrant, this is the best time to take care of it.”
