Abernathy Police Sergeant Terry Edge is still recovering at University Medical Center after he was seriously injured in a car accident Saturday morning. As of Monday afternoon, Edge was listed in serious condition.
The Department of Public safety said they are still investigating the cause of this crash. They are waiting for Sergeant Edge to recover so that they can ask him more about what happened.
DPS said the accident happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday as Edge was traveling northbound I-27 and side-swiped a tractor trailer just south of County Road 6000. DPS officials said that Edge was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle. He was taken to UMC with incapacitating injuries. Edge was off-duty at the time of the accident.
Abernathy Police Chief Cameron W. Bowman spoke with EverythingLubbock.com Monday about Edge. Bowman explained that Edge had worked with Abernathy Police since 2014 and had worked in law enforcement since 2006. Edge is one of five full time officers who work with Abernathy Police, and his absence has been difficult for their department.
“We’re all worried and we’re all hurt but we gotta go on with our jobs as well ,so we have to deal with that too,” explained Bowman, who has visited Edge in the hospital several times since the crash. “We’re still out protecting the public 24/7, we had to do some maneuvering around with our personnel. And then we’re hoping and praying every day for his recovery and for him to come back to us.”
Bowman couldn’t comment on the investigation or on Edge’s condition. He called Edge an “outstanding officer” and explained that Edge is is responsible for training new officers with their department. Bowman said he’s grateful for the support Edge and his family have received from other law enforcement officers across West Texas.
“I talked to his family and they just want to thank everybody in the community so far with the concern and to just continue with the thoughts and prayers for Officer Edge, any help would be appreciated,” Bowman said.
