Abilene Hotel Giving Homes to Stray Animals

When stray animals are seen along the highways, many drivers carry on with hardly a second thought, but not the owner of the Whitten Inn Properties.

“Mr. Whitten just does that, he sees an animal in distress, and we take them in. He does find homes for them, or we end up taking care of them. He’s pretty amazing,” says Sue Davis, property manager of the Travel Inn off of Old Anson Road.

Among those animals is Highway. No one is sure of his breed, but they do know for sure that he’s a fan of McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

Davis says Highway was found along I-20 just like many of the other animals they have rescued. They now care for about 15 animals altogether.

“Kind of off by the freeway and out by the outskirts, you do see it a lot,” says Davis about seeing so many animals just dropped off by their owners.

Shadow the cat is also one of the animals living at the Whitten Inn. She was rescued about a year ago, and not only does she greet the guests, but Davis says she pulls receipts off the machines.

Davis has seen quite a few animals come through, but says it’s rewarding being able to find homes for them.

“There were three dogs that were dropped off and they picked them up because they liked them, but yeah I’ve seen a lot in not even a year,” says Davis.

As for Shadow and Highway, they seem to be happy living with the guests at the Whitten Inn and to have a warm and welcoming home.

Davis says that she and Mr. Whitten wish they could help rescue all of the animals who don’t have homes, but it’s nice that they’re at least able to rescue a few of them.
