Lubbock Police arrested a juvenile male on Thursday evening for aggravated assault after a shooting incident in the 3200 block of 33rd Street.
Police said the boy shot his friend. The suspect and victim both told police it was an accident.
Police were called to Covenant Medical Center at about 7:45 p.m. for the report of a patient with a gunshot wound.
“[The victim said] he was playing a video game and [the suspect] was cleaning a firearm,” a police report said. “[The victim] advised [that the suspect] did not realize the firearm had a bullet in the chamber.”
“[The suspect] fired the bullet accidently, which struck [the victim] in the right side of [the] right leg,” the police report said.
The suspect and his mother took the victim to Covenant Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wound according to the police report.
At first, the suspect told police he found the gun in an alley. Police weren’t convinced.
The suspect then admitted he purchased the firearm from a friend.
An officer wrote in the police report, “I had probable cause to believe [the suspect] had committed an aggravated assault against [the victim] by recklessly discharging the firearm…”
The suspect who was not listed by name was taken to the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center.
