The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to a crash on IH-27 north involving three vehicles and a pedestrian that occurred Monday night in Randall County, resulting in the death of one person.

At approximately 11:25 p.m., KC Cantu, 28, of Amarillo, was driving a 2008 Ford tow truck and towing a 1995 Chevrolet pickup-truck northbound on IH-27 N approximately two miles north of Canyon. Cantu activated the emergency lights on the tow truck,  pulled onto the improved shoulder of the outside lane, stopped and exited the tow truck to make adjustments to the towed unit. Jose Hernandez, 22, of Amarillo was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram pick-up truck northbound on IH-27N and collided into the towed unit and Cantu, causing his death.

Cantu was pronounced dead on scene by the Randall County Justice of the peace.

During the investigation, it was determined that Hernandez had been drinking. Upon completion of the DWI investigation, Hernandez was arrested, booked into the Randall County jail and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

I-27 N was closed for approximately 5 hours and traffic was diverted onto the service road south of the accident scene.

The road conditions were dry and no other vehicles were involved.
