Amateur Radio Operators Take to Airwaves for Field Day

Members of the Lubbock Amateur Radio Club (LARC) participated in the annual Field Day event. The Amateur Radio Relay League (AARL) hosts Field Day, the most popular on-air event in the United States and Canada, according to the group’s website.

Lubbock’s team set up outside the KAMC/KLBK studios, spending the day testing equipment and demonstrating HAM radio technology.

“The objective of the ARRL field day event is to work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions,” said the group’s website.

HAM radio operators contact other amateur radio clubs around the country and around the world over a 24-hour period. Some enjoy the competition, while others participate for the camaraderie.

One member of LARC tells EverythingLubbock.com that he shows up to learn from other local HAM radio operators, and uses this opportunity to test equipment in case of a real emergency, like severe weather, power outages, of loss of cell phone service.

Over 35,000 participants take part in the event, which is held annually on the fourth weekend of June.
