Teaching individuals with diabetes how to manage the disease effectively will be the focus of the 7th Annual Healthy Living in the Real World event Saturday, April 2nd from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Community Health Center of Lubbock located at 1610 5th Street. The event is free to the public.
According to the ADA, 29.1 million Americans were diabetic as of 2012 with 21 million diagnosed and 8.1 million undiagnosed. 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and it remains the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. In addition, ADA reports that about 208,000 Americans under the age of 20 are estimated to have a diabetes diagnosis.
The mission of the ADA is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The Healthy Living event was started to provide education to adults and families regarding the control of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes through healthy lifestyle choices.
Brian Carr, PhD will be the featured speaker at the event, discussing the psychology of living with diabetes. In addition, a panel discussion will be held to answer questions regarding exercise, nutrition, medication, and various other aspects of diabetes. Panelists will include a physical therapist, registered dietitian, and a pharmacist.
In addition to the speaker and panel discussion, participants will be able to visit vendor booths, register for prizes, and participate in a free health screening. Any member of the community who is anxious about whether they may have diabetes is welcome to attend the event and take part in the screening.
Finally, a free lunch will be provided to individuals who participate and RSVP no later than March 30th by calling (806)794-0691, ext. 6139. Any questions regarding the event may also be directed to that number or to ADA Director Martha Atwood at matwood@diabetes.org.
