Anonymous Donor to Match up to $100,000 in Public Donations Made to Food Bank in August

A local donor has committed to match dollar for dollar every donation made between August 1st and August 31st to the South Plains Food Bank. An exception will be made August 22nd, the first day of school, when the donor will triple match the day’s donations, in “Triple Match Monday.”

Chief Executive Officer for the South Plains Food Bank, David Weaver, says they plan to utilize all the funds received during this time to combat childhood hunger across the community. “Summer is an intense time for us as we strive to provide meals to kids across our community who were used to receiving free and reduced meals at school,” Weaver says. “Our Summer Meals program grows during the summer, but when school starts we switch over to our Kids Cafe program to ensure children across our area are receiving the nutrition they need to perform well in school. Many people don’t realize food is a much needed school supply.”

The donation is being made in honor of the Food Bank’s “Together We Can” campaign, which aims to close the “hunger gap” felt by the people served across a 20-county area. Currently, the Food Bank serves just over 57,000 people, but nearly 97,000 people qualify for Food Bank services across the South Plains. To provide opportunities to expand programs to reach and feed more people, the “Together We Can” public campaign was created.

“When we officially got the numbers from Feeding America detailing how many people actually need our help, we knew we had to do more,” Weaver says. “We are excited for the potential we have for this donation, and the good it will do for our community. We are imploring our community to help us maximize this donation.”

The public can make donations online at www.spfb.org, or by calling 806-763-3003.
