Another Marvel, Gibson Returns, and a Little Election Mockery

Marvel’s mystical, martial arts superhero comes to life through Benedict Cumberbatch: Dr. Strange. He must choose either his former, rich, neurosurgeon ego — or defend reality against the most powerful sorcerer ever known. The effect are perhaps the best of any Marvel marvel, and the reviews resound. It’s a PG-13 mind-bender that runs a little longer than two hours. Try to get a grip at Tinseltown, Alamo, Stars & Stripes, or Premiere where it’s also in IMAX.

Hackshaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, tells the true story of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor. His twist of God forbade him to kill, but took him to war. The Army medic saved 75 men at Okinawa and took his war wounds as a patriot. The rated R drama runs 2:20. Find a new hero at either Cinemark, Alamo, and Premiere.

And if you’re in the mood for some surreal political comedy — as if this election isn’t — check out Lubbock Community Theatre‘s experimental theater premiere. Ubu Roy: An American Tale is running now, and continues this weekend and next. Jared Strange, who earned his Masters in Playwriting from Texas Tech, adapted the notorious 1896  French play that shocked its audience. He brings it 120 years forward to parody our polls. The show starts at 9:00 p.m., Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Get your tickets through lubbockcommunitytheatre.org.
