The president of the El Paso chapter of the Bandidos motorcycle club died Thursday after he was shot Sunday in a bar in east El Paso.
El Paso Motorcycle Coalition provided word of the death of Juan Martinez, 61.
Police referred to the shooting as a gang-related fight. According to police, Martinez was one of four men shot during the incident.
On Tuesday, the club’s national president, Clifton Roberts, said the shooting was unfortunate but not a reflection of the club’s values.
Roberts said, “We want to make sure nobody misconstrues that the Bandidos Motorcycle Club is here to harm the city.”
Roberts also said, “These guys have raised families; they work here and have lived here for many, many years. So, by no means are we trying to turn this into a war zone.”
On Friday, a makeshift memorial with flowers and candles could be seen outside the eastside bar.
Earlier this week, police arrested Javier Gonzalez, 34, of the Kinfolk Motorcycle Club in connection to the shooting.
He was charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
However, it was not yet clear if those charges will be upgraded as a result of Martinez’s death.
