The Better Business Bureau and Robert Spence Agency warned parents and kids that talent agency’s that visit Lubbock from out of town, promising the opportunity to meet Hollywood talent executives, may be misleading.

“You’re accepted or you’re not and if you’re accepted they usually make an appointment for you to come back the next day and sometimes they will ask you to bring back your credit card, that’s your biggest red flag.” Brenda Becknell, director of Robert Spence Agency, said.

Becknell said she has checked out a few of these auditions herself and that they use questionable tactics.

For example, she said they will not tell you the location of the audition until they have received your contact information.

Becknell added that some of these talent companies really just want people to pay them to attend a convention in Hollywood that can cost thousands of dollars.

“They’re charging you not to be with an agency because they aren’t an agency they are basically a convention that brings agents in from all over to audition you but there’s no guarantee,” Becknell said. “So basically, you are just paying them.”

She said it is not a fast-track to stardom and the Better Business Bureau agreed.

BBB President Greg Linder said when going into these auditions parents need to be realistic.

“You kind of get emotionally involved as a parent and want to see your child succeed but understand that no amount of money is going to make your child a star,” Linder said.

Linder added, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
