As of June, Lubbock has its very own ‘Black Lives Matter’ group and on August 30th they are holding their first ‘peaceful demonstration’ from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM at the Tim Cole Memorial.
Francesca Di Poppa, has been a Texas Tech philosophy professor for 10 years, and as a spokesman for the group she said t’s important for the Lubbock community to come together and strive for social change.
“It’s kind of interesting, we’ve heard comments like: ‘Why would you want to do something like this in Lubbock?’ and my question.. my answer to that is.. why not?” said Di Poppa.
Destyni Rogers is a media strategies student at Texas Tech and said that she was one of the first members of the group, and she hopes this first meeting will invite productive conversation, despite differences in opinion.
“We can have that conversation to make a change in the community and we don’t want negativity or any violence.” said Rogers.
The event will have speakers and different poetry segments, and rather than a march, it will stay in one central location. Di Poppa said that anyone is welcome to attend the event as long as they support the movement and have peaceful intentions.
The group said they have had constant contact with Lubbock police who will be attending the event to show support. They have also received authorization from the city.
