Kicking off breast cancer awareness month, the Blo Blow Dry Bar on 98th street is offering free services to breast cancer patients that are undergoing chemotherapy. Every wednesday, women are invited into the salon to have their non-synthetic wigs washed and styled. They can also have their makeup done and sip on some pink champagne. The salon’s public relations representative, Razonia McClellan said they are looking to get the word out.
“It takes an incredible amount of strength to go through breast cancer and chemo,” said McClellan. “I think its very important for them to feel at their very best because when you have a positive attitude it helps you get through those treatments.”
The salon is also encouraging clients to make donations to the Susan G. Komen fund, that helps to find a cure. When a donation is made, the client can post it on their wall and write who it is in honor to.
“Any guests that come in will be able to give back and they will have their card displayed for the entire month,” said McClellan. “We’re calling it the beauty warriors wall.”
The makeup and hair stylists said that this is a special experience to give back and make these women feel beautiful. The services are free only on Wednesdays from 9-6 PM. They say that walk-ins are welcome. Hair stylist, Harley West said this hits home for her because her grandmother suffered from breast cancer.
“Women that go through such traumatic experiences need to know that there are women supporting them,” said West. “Whether its coming in and getting their hair done or receiving donations.”
