The National Weather Service confirmed on Wednesday that a tornado struck Anton Tuesday night when severe weather hit the region.
According to the NWS, the EF1 tornado developed about one mile east of Anton on the eastern edge of the town. NWS needed to examine the scene before confirming it was a tornado and not straight-line winds.
The NWS said the winds were as strong as 110 mph and the width of the tornado’s path was about 200 yards.
The tornado caused significant damage to a house and barn while also snapping trees, the NWS said.
Lubbock weather radar showed the debris, likely from the house, was lofted around 4000 to 5000 feet above the ground.
The homeowner said it felt like the tornado touched down for just a moment and then was gone. Thankfully, no one was injured and the damage was localized to the homeowner’s property.
Sheriff Ray Scifres with the Hockley County Sheriff’s Department said they were monitoring the area of storms all night but didn’t know the extent of the damage until Wednesday morning.
“Still fortunate that everyone is okay,” Sheriff Scifres said. “If you look at the damage, it could have been a lot worse.”
