Brownfield Cubs Host Hero Rally for First Responders

Students from Brownfield Middle School took a little time out of their pep rally Thursday afternoon to honor local first responders.

The Hero Rally was an idea from one of the teachers, Brandi McGinnis. She said she got the idea from an internet video and wanted to do it at her school.

The cheerleaders, football players and basketball players participated in the festivities with some inspiring speeches from the coaches.

Officer Alan Nelson, a Brownfield Police Officer, said he knew the students were good kids and he is happy the rest of the community could see it.

“Lorenzo and I work with these kids on a day to day basis and get to know these kids in a different light than just the legal ramifications of being a law enforcement officer,” Officer Nelson said.  “And getting to show what these kids have in them to other law enforcement officers is pretty special.”

The students also sold t-shirts and raised more than $600 to contribute to the Jeremy Shedd Scholarship fund. Officer Shedd worked for the Brownfield Police Department and was killed by a drunk driver in 2014.
