Two South Plains boys basketball teams made it to the semi-finals in the UIL State Basketball Tournament in San Antonio.
The Brownfield Cubs had a big send-off through the town Wednesday morning. The Brownfield Police Department and Brownfield Fire Department helped to show the boys around town before they hit the road.
“Since Monday, it’s been wild and crazy, lots of support from our community, from our student body,” Brownfield High School Principal Paul Coronado said.
He said they had 400 tickets available from UIL and they sold out. Those wishing to attend the games can still buy tickets in San Antonio. Brownfield will play in the 3A semi-finals Thursday afternoon.
“We’ll definitely have a big crowd, and hopefully come back with the state title,” Coronado said.
Coronado said he’s proud of the team.
“We have great things happening here in Brownfield, we have great kids, faculty members, the community, so there wouldn’t be another place to be than here in Brownfield,” he said.
The Levelland Lobos are also playing for the state title in 4A.
“Everybody is fired up,” Levelland Mayor Barbra Pinner said. “We haven’t done this since 1952 — 63 years since the boys have gone to state.”
Pinner said she was at the game Saturday when the boys won to qualify for the semi-finals. She said the community has been behind the team, and she thinks Levelland will also have a good showing at the games in San Antonio.
“Just keep working hard, never give up, just that determination that you’ve had and listening to the coaches,” Pinner said.
The Levelland City Council had a proclamation Monday night, naming March 11 Levelland Lobos Day. March 11 is the day the team plays their first game in the state tournament.
In their first games, Brownfield will play Aransas Pass and Levelland plays Silsbee.
