Close friends released the name of a Brownwood teen who drowned in San Saba Sunday evening.

D’Avion Wasson, 17, was swimming at Mill Pond Park when he went underwater and never resurfaced just before 6:00 p.m.

The teen was in a “swim at your own risk” area with no lifeguard on duty, and the San Saba County Sheriff’s Office believes he was trying to swim across from one bank to the other when he drowned.

Witnesses were able to locate him under water, drag him to shore, and perform CPR, but he was still unresponsive when emergency crews arrived on scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was transported to the Rollins-Brook Hospital in Lampasas where he was pronounced dead.

Brownwood ISD has released the following statements in regards to D’Avion’s passing:

“Two weeks ago, D’Avion started his senior year at Brownwood High School excited about the academic and athletic opportunities a new year brings,” stated Brownwood ISD Superintendent, Dr. Joe Young. “Today is a difficult day as we realize his infectious smile will be missing when we return to school. Our crisis response team, including counselors and local ministers, will be available at BHS tomorrow morning for all students and staff members who need help dealing with this tragedy. Brownwood ISD extends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends, and we appreciate all the positive thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.”

“D’Avion was a senior and starting guard on the Brownwood Lion Basketball team,” stated Moore. “The BHS family is hurting along with D’Avion’s family today because we have lost a friend, classmate, and teammate. D’Avion was a competitor on the court and we will honor him by striving for excellence in all that we do as a staff and student body.”
