Texas Parks and Wildlife is prepping for 130 artificial fish habitat structures to be placed in Buffalo Springs Lake this weekend to enhance fish populations.
“This is going to benefit all the anglers because it’s going to concentrate fish in various places around the lake so they can go and catch fish,” Texas Parks and Wildlife, John Clayton said.
The habitats will be marked with GPS locations to help fishers target their favorite sportfish at the lake. With majority of lakes on the South Plains being man made, Clayton said they need some updating when it comes to habitat.
“One of the main problems affecting several lakes in West Texas is many of them were built back in the late 50’s and 60’s and as a result most of the habitats that were there have rotted away,” Clayton said.
Clayton said the habitats don’t come cheap and they want to thank several of the supporters and volunteers involved.
“I think the places like the South Plains are pretty dry areas. So for us to have a lake this close to the city is pretty rare. We want to do what we can to provide a good fishing experience close to home,” Clayton said.
