The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research Transition Academy is hosting a series of events throughout April for Autism Awareness Month.
Barnes and Noble Book Fair
The Transition Academy will host a book fair at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at the South Plains Mall from 1-3 p.m. Saturday (April 15). Various children’s books will be available for purchase, including picture books, coloring books and chapter books. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Transition Academy to support programming. Games and activities also will be available for children.
Lubbock Arts Festival
The Transition Academy will have a booth at the Lubbock Arts Festival on Saturday (April 22) from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and on Sunday (April 23) from noon-5 p.m. Examples of student artwork will be available for purchase, including jewelry, Texas Tech blankets and embroidered seatbelt covers that alert first responders that the passenger has autism.
Style Show
The Transition Academy will host a style show sponsored by Dillard’s in the mall foyer outside of the men’s Dillard’s store at the South Plains Mall at 7 p.m. Thursday (April 20). A reception will follow at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at the South Plains Mall to honor Burkhart student Aaron Daly, who is being featured as the resident artist and the Barnes and Noble Artist of the Month for April.
Songwriting Workshop
Terri Hendrix, a Texas-based singer-songwriter, will return to the Transition Academy to host songwriting workshops for Burkhart students on Tuesday (April 25). The morning workshop will be from 8:45-11:45 a.m. and the afternoon workshop will be from 12:45-2:45 p.m. Hendrix will lead the workshop and help the students write their own song.
