The Big Spring Police Department is investigating the discovery of a dead cat found burned inside a mailbox Monday morning.

Officer responded to a home on Union Street around 9:00 a.m. to assist animal control after the cat was discovered.

Police officials say the owner of the cat lived next door to where it was found. The owner told police they had “no idea why anyone would have harmed the cat.”

The remains were taken by Big Spring Animal Control, according to the release.
