Shoppers at The Market Street on Quaker and 98th got their groceries with a side of Christmas cheer Tuesday morning. A yellow bus pulled up in front of the store, and out walked 10 kindergartners from Calvary Baptist church. The kindergartners got out their bells, and helped raise money for the seasonal kettle campaign for The Salvation Army. Kaitlyn Frederick with The Army said the joy is very palpable when shoppers see the children.
“We are really excited to have kindergartners out here today, whenever we see volunteers this young we get a better response from individuals who donate, but it also really teaches these kids that service is a part of life.” Frederick said.
Despite the chilly weather, the children rang their bells and sang Christmas songs while shoppers stopped to donate money for a good cause. Afterwards they went inside the store for cookies and hot cocoa. Kindergartner, Elijah Bearden led the group in song, and said he loves to learn about giving.
“I got to see people putting money in, and last month it was my first time to give money.” Bearden said.
Calvary Baptist Teacher, Kelly O-guinn said they think its important to teach their students at a young age that Christmas is a time for giving, not just receiving. To learn more about how you can help with the kettle campaign visit: salvationarmyusa.org
