Last season Patrick Mahomes was one of the best quarterbacks in the country throwing for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns while rushing for almost 500.
As for this season, his former go to wide receiver Jakeem Grant was the first to start the Mahomes Heisman hype, “Pat is an extremely great quarterback in my opinion, my thinking I think Pat could win the Heisman, he has every quarterback beaten in the NCAA”.
Unfortunately for number 5 he is losing his top rusher and top receiver from last season in DeAndre Washington and Jakeem Grant but plenty of options remain in the tech offense.
When you compare Mahomes previous season to that of Marcus Mariota’s Heisman winning run Grant may be on to something here.
Mariota threw for 4,454 yards and 42 touchdowns adding 770 yards and 16 TD’s on the ground. One area Mariota excelled in was not turing the ball over, he only threw 4 interceptions on his way to the Heisman compared to the 15 INTs Mahomes threw last season.
Oh and one other element Mahomes might need if he wants a shot at the Heisman, Mariota and the Oregon Ducks went 13-2 that season losing in the semi-final of the College Football Playoff.
Texas Tech was 7-6 last season and had a defense that averaged 42.6 points against good for 125th in the country.
Moral of the story, Mahomes is going to need a lot more help from his defense and a couple more victories in the Big 12 before we even get into Heisman talk.
Individually though, there is no denying he is one of the top quarterbacks in the country.
