After reviewing Lubbock police reports, KLBK and EverythingLubbock.com found certain crimes spike with college students returning to the South Plains. Car crimes in particular.
“In the fall and the spring, we do usually notice an influx in all crime,” Myers said. “It can be a persons crime, property crime, burglary of motor vehicle thefts, anything like that just due to the sheer volume of students that are brought in by Texas Tech and LCU (Lubbock Christian University).”
Myers explains car burglary increases from more cars being brought into town, rather than the students being the thieves themselves.
“It’s mainly just more of an opportunity it seems like because of the volume of cars that are now here,” Myers said. “You have the Tech games going on, things like that. So there’s more community events where or a central location where vehicles are parked. It’s just concentrated in those areas more.”
Myers added that leaving your belongings in your car comes off as an open invitation to the culprits.
“Don’t put your purses in your trunks,” Myers said. “People are watching for people who are putting their bags in the trunks of their car. Don’t leave stuff in your car. Just go ahead and take everything out before you come to the game.”
It doesn’t stop there either.
