Thursday, the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps had another chance to join with the community in celebrating their season.

The Rip Griffin Center was packed with fans who wanted to not only get the chance to see and congratulate the team, but also get a picture with the NCAA Division II National Championship trophy.

Monday, the Lady Chaps beat Alaska-Anchorage to win the title.

Councilwoman Latrelle Joy spoke at the celebration, reading a proclamation from the city, declaring April 7, 2016 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals Day in Lubbock.

Joy was joined by other local and state leaders who were there to congratulate the team.

Also in the crowd were some of the fans who rode a bus to Indianapolis to watch the team play the championship game. The bus returned to campus just before Thursday’s celebrations began.

“So happy for those girls, and they’re wonderful girls, and they were so kind to talk to us and visit with us, even while we were up there,” said Mary Wischkaemper, who had just returned from the trip.

The Lady Chaps took a chance to say thank you to all the fans who have supported them through the season.

“My favorite part is all of the fans, and everyone who stands outside the locker room and gives us hugs, and makes us who aren’t from Lubbock feel like we’re family to them, too, when we’re not even related to them, so that’s pretty awesome,” Blair Taylor, a senior on the Lady Chaps, said.

The team signed autographs after the celebration and many fans posed for pictures with the trophy.
