The Bell County Sheriff’s Department reports a father was arrested Tuesday morning after leaving his three young children alone inside a van.
Authorities say a man stopped to offer help after seeing a van abandoned with the doors open around 2:00 a.m. The man then called authorities after finding three young children inside the van.
The children were cold but were alright, according to authorities. They were taken from the van and places in a patrol unit.
It was at this point the children’s father stole the vehicle of the man who stopped to render aid and fled the scene.
At 9:00 a.m., authorities responded to a possible accident on Farm-to-Market Road 2268 that turned out to be the stolen vehicle.
The suspect was located near a house and taken into custody without incident around 11:00 a.m..
The Bell County Sheriff’s Department is handling the case and has charges currently pending against the suspect, Anthony Alfredo Chavez.
Chavez’s chidren are currently in the care of Child Protective Services.
